Gotthard Graubner
Gespräch mit Josef Albers

The oeuvre of Gotthard Graubner (born 1930 in Vogtland) is considered one of the most out-there positions of a painting style founded primarily on the expressive possibilities of color. All levels of his paintings – such as form, space, movement and light – is owed to the way he organizes color and elevates it to an exclusive pictorial component.
The paintings reproduced in this publication are set against a series of selected reproductions from Josef Albers’ cycle, Homage of the Square, an artist who, with similar emphasis, understood his painting to be a fascinating dialogue between colors. In this juxtaposition, the faith of the two painters in the special artistic language of color becomes manifest, while at the same time the quite different paths they took are made clear, a reflection of their different historical starting points. Thus Gotthard Graubner. Gespräch mit Josef Albers is also a contribution to the history of color in 20th century painting.
